Daman and Diu GK Questions and Current Affairs

Daman and Diu, a relatively young Union Territory (UT) located on the western coast of India next to the Arabian Sea, came into existence on 30th May 1987. While the UT may seem like a speck on the map with it is the second smallest state/UT in India with an area of 112 square kilometres (km2) and the third smallest state/UT in share of overall population of India (0.02%) with 0.24 million people in 2011 (Census 2011), the cultural mosaic and economic structure of Daman and Diu is unique


Goa, Daman and Diu were incorporated into the Republic of India on December 19, 1961, by military conquest. Portugal did not recognise the Indian annexation of these territories until the carnation revolution of 1974. Over the 400+ years, the coastal enclaves of Daman and Diu on the Arabian Sea coast were part of Portuguese India, along with Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

  • The Portuguese Diogo de Melo reached at the spot by chance in 1523 when heading towards Ormuz. He was caught in a violent storm and had his boat blown towards the coast of Daman. Soon after, it was settled as a Portuguese colony which lasted for over 400 years. A larger fort was built in Motidaman in the 16th century to guard against the Mughals who ruled the area until the Portuguese arrived.
  • In December 2019, the Parliament of India passed legislation to merge Daman and Diu with the nearby union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli to create a new union territory to be known as Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

Geographical Structure

Daman and Diu, the union territory of India, comprising two widely separated districts on the country’s western coast. Daman is an enclave on the state of Gujarat’s southern coast, situated 100 miles (160 km) north of Mumbai (Bombay). Diu encompasses an island off the southern coast of Gujarat’s the Kathiawar Peninsula, 40 miles (64 km) southeast of Veraval, as well as a small area on the mainland.
