History

In the 19th century, Meghalaya became an equivalent part of the British Empire in India. During the British Raj, Meghalaya was added under the British Empire. After in 1935, Meghalaya became a part of Assam. Meghalaya was created by cutting out two districts from the state of Assam (the United Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills) and the Garo Hills on 21 January 1972.

Facts:

  • Meghalaya was a region inhabited by Garo, Khasi and Jaintia tribes from ancient times.
  • Till independence of India, during British rule, Meghalaya was a part of Assam state with semi-autonomous status.
  • When state Bengal was divided in 1905, Meghalaya was merged into new territory named Eastern Bengal and Assam”. When Bengal united again in 1912, Meghalaya again became part of Assam province.
  • Full autonomy was accorded to Meghalaya on 2nd April 1970 after passing of Assam reorganisation Act 1969.
  • In 1971 Indian parliament passed North East Reorganisation act and thus Meghalaya became full-fledged Indian state on 21 Jan 1972 by merging the districts of Garo, Khasi and Jaintia hills.

Geographical Structure

The state is bounded in the south part by the Bangladeshi divisions of Mymensingh and Sylhet, and in the west part by the Bangladeshi division of Rangpur and in the north and east part by the India’s State of Assam. The capital city of Meghalaya is Shillong. During the British rule in India, the British imperial authorities named it the “Scotland of the East“. Meghalaya was earlier part of Assam, but on 21 January 1972, the districts of Khasi, Garo and Jaintia hills became the new state of Meghalaya.
